Practice Better is a HIPAA-compliant practice management platform built specifically for health and wellness professionals. With over 50,000 practitioners using it, it's one of the more established options in the health-specific EHR and client portal space, serving nutritionists, dietitians, health coaches, naturopaths, functional medicine practitioners, mental health counselors, and chiropractors.

What it does

The platform combines the core pieces of a health practice into one place: scheduling, telehealth, intake forms, charting, secure messaging, payment processing, and a client portal. The client-facing portal lets patients book appointments, complete forms, exchange secure messages, track food and lifestyle habits, follow treatment protocols, and access telehealth sessions — all from a web browser or the companion mobile app.

The health-specific features are where it stands out from general-purpose client portals. Practitioners can build detailed protocols (supplement recommendations, nutrient targets, foods to include or avoid) and share them directly with clients. Food and lifestyle journaling pulls from a large food database, giving dietitians and nutritionists a real workflow advantage. Programs and courses let practitioners package their expertise for group or self-paced delivery, moving revenue beyond 1:1 sessions.

Pricing

Practice Better has five plan tiers billed monthly (annual billing saves 20%):

  • Sprout — Free, for students and those just starting. Limited to a handful of clients.
  • Starter — $35/month. 1 practitioner, 10 clients, 1 GB storage. Includes scheduling, telehealth, billing, secure messaging, and the client portal.
  • Professional — $69/month. 300 clients, 5 GB storage. Adds group scheduling, Zapier integration, payment plans, and fixed-date programs.
  • Plus — $99/month (recommended). Unlimited clients and storage, 3 admin licenses. Adds evergreen and self-paced programs, portal branding, personalized URL, SMS reminders (750/month), broadcast messaging, and a dedicated fax number.
  • Team — $155/month. 2 practitioner licenses (add more at $50/month each), unlimited admins. Adds custom roles, shared calendar, team reporting, and managed billing.

Add-ons are available on Professional and above: AI charting with transcription (first 600 minutes free, then $0.60/hour), ePrescribe ($49/month plus $99 one-time onboarding per prescriber), SMS reminders beyond the included allotment (5¢ per text), and fax ($0.10/page beyond the free tier).

Integrations

Practice Better connects with Zoom and supports Zapier from the Professional plan up, opening integrations with hundreds of third-party tools. Dietitians and nutritionists get a native integration with That Clean Life for meal planning. For practices that need it, ePrescribe with optional EPCS for controlled substances is available as an add-on.

Compliance

The platform is HIPAA-compliant for US practitioners and PIPEDA-compliant for Canada (the company is based in Toronto). Telehealth sessions are encrypted, messaging is secured, and client health information is stored with appropriate access controls.

Limitations

Practice Better is purpose-built for health and wellness — it's not a fit for general professional services, agencies, or anything outside that vertical. White-labeling and custom branding are only available on the Plus plan ($99/month) and above. The free Sprout plan is genuinely constrained, more of a student tool than a viable solo practice option. Teams needing more than 2 practitioners on the base Team plan will see costs climb quickly at $50 per additional license.
